Rick Kaps
1942-1998

Rick Kaps, retired Sequim High School teacher and boys basketball coach whose 1988 team finished second to Rainier Beach in the Class AA state tournament, died of cancer Feb. 3, 1998. He was 55.

Kaps had a career record of 255-148 and coached Goldendale and later Sequim to several state tournament appearances. He grew up in Aberdeen, and played on the 1960 Chehalis team that won the Class A state tournament.

Kaps retired from coaching in 1989 and from teaching in 1996. He continued to live in Sequim.

His son, Ryan, was a standout on the 1988 state finalist team and later played two years at the University of Washington and two years at Weber State. He now is the head graphic designer for several well-known Florida sports camps.

In addition to Ryan, Kaps is survived by his wife, Kay, daughter, Lisa, of Spokane and parents, Paul and Katherine.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Sequim gymnasium.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society or the Rick Kaps Scholarship Fund at Sequim High School.
